Travellers’ tales: in search of the Bedouin

Monday 15th June 2020  7.00pm

Louise Sibley will talk about leading nine women on a month-long journey, following the story of the modern Bedouin right across the Middle East.

The journey took place in the autumn of 2018, starting in Cairo and progressing into the Sinai, up through Southern Israel and through Jerusalem into the northern West Bank, and down through Jordan.  Among their adventures, they attended a village mosque opening at the foot of a mountain, slept rough in the Sinai Desert, were hosted at an AirBNB in one of the unrecognised villages of the Negev, broke bread with families living near the old town of Sebastia, and enjoyed pure luxury in the fabulous Dana Reserve and Wadi Rum,  before heading home.  Why no men? Well, apart from the guides, it just happened that way, and there was one for a part of the trip – but his is another story……..

Louise Sibley has spent ten years engaged with the work of the Abraham Path Initiative to establish a long-distance walking trail across the Middle East, following the story of Abraham/Ibrahim.  During that time she has explored on foot rural trails in the Middle East from south-east Turkey to the Sinai desert. She has participated in or led no fewer than 15 journeys across the region, served on the board of the US-based founding organisation and established a small charity in the UK which to supports local trail-based communities and to encourage and give advice to British people wanting to walk in the Middle East.
